The world's tallest concrete face rockfill dam has surpassed 100

Recently, the filling height of the world's tallest concrete face rockfill dam, the Lawa Hydropower Station dam project, which was surveyed, designed, and mainly constructed by China Electric Power Construction Corporation, exceeded 100 meters, laying a solid foundation for the power station to achieve its production and power generation goals ahead of schedule.


Lawa Hydropower Station is located on the main stream of Jinsha River at the junction of Garze Prefecture in Sichuan Province and Changdu City in Xizang, with a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts. It is an important part of the clean energy base in the upper reaches of Jinsha River, one of the nine clean energy bases to be constructed during the 14th Five Year Plan period. The dam height of the hydropower station is 239 meters, and the dam crest elevation is 2709 meters. It is the highest concrete face rockfill dam in the world at present.

The power station is surveyed and designed throughout the entire process by Zhongnan Institute, a subsidiary of China Electric Power Construction Corporation. The main dam project is undertaken by Hydropower 12th Bureau, while subsidiary enterprises such as Hydropower 1st Bureau, Hydropower 4th Bureau, Hydropower 8th Bureau, Hydropower 9th Bureau, Hydropower 11th Bureau, and Hydropower 14th Bureau undertake the main construction tasks.


The dam site of the Lawa Hydropower Station is located in a deep gorge on a plateau, with complex terrain and a narrow construction site. The foundation pit of the dam is 90 meters deep, which is the deepest among similar hydropower projects in China.

To ensure the efficient and high-quality construction of world-class projects, the project team continuously optimizes the construction plan and comprehensively applies technologies such as unmanned rolling, intelligent materials, intelligent water addition, and intelligent paving to form a smart dam collaborative command platform, comprehensively improving the efficiency and quality of dam filling. As of now, the daily filling volume of the Lawa Hydropower Station dam has exceeded 30000 cubic meters, and the monthly filling volume is close to 1 million cubic meters. The monthly rise height exceeds 13.2 meters, making it the fastest rising concrete face rockfill dam in China.


The dam site area of the Lawa Hydropower Station is a high-risk area for geological disasters and strong earthquakes, and the quality requirements for dam filling are extremely high. To comprehensively avoid the problems of low precision and difficult quality control caused by manual compaction, the project team adopted an unmanned compaction machine group to replace manual operation, making the entire process of dam compaction controllable.

In order to build an ecological and environmentally friendly dam, the project team has pioneered the large-scale use of new energy dump trucks to transport and fill dam materials in cold high-altitude areas. So far, nearly 90 new energy dump trucks have been invested, 3 new energy charging and swapping stations have been built, and all dump trucks have been intelligently transformed to comprehensively improve the efficiency of dam material transportation and reduce overall management costs. The large-scale use of new energy dump trucks has reduced the cumulative carbon dioxide emissions by 64000 tons during the entire process of dam filling, exploring a new path of "cost reduction, efficiency improvement, low-carbon and environmental protection" for the domestic water conservancy and hydropower industry to build more landmark projects in high-altitude cold regions.

After completion, the project will provide 8.224 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, saving about 2.8 million tons of provincial standard coal and reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter by about 9.1 million tons. It is of great significance to help the country achieve its "dual carbon" goals as soon as possible and further implement the "West East Electricity Transmission" strategy.
