The building materials industry releases major technological innovation achievements for the first time in a concentrated manner


The world's first full oxygen combustion carbon capture project in the cement industry, China's first zero carbon ammonia hydrogen energy combustion project, cement aerogel "super material", 2-hour foldable houses, and a number of scientific and technological innovation projects in the building materials industry that have achieved breakthrough results, were collectively unveiled at the 2024 Building Materials Conference.


Currently, green technology has brought tremendous changes to the building materials industry, and China's building materials industry has demonstrated strong development potential and innovation capabilities in areas such as green and low-carbon technology application, new material development, and digital transformation. The proportion of building materials and new materials sector continues to increase, reaching 20%, becoming an important support for China's new generation of strategic emerging industries such as information technology, aerospace, and rail transit.


Yan Xiaofeng, Secretary and President of the Party Committee of China Building Materials Federation: As of September 2024, there are over 5300 certified green building materials enterprises and more than 12000 certified products. China's cement industry has already achieved carbon peak, and the entire building materials industry is expected to achieve carbon peak before 2025.


New heat insulation and energy saving material: cement aerogel


Among building materials, there is a kind of thermal insulation material called aerogel. As one of the emerging technologies in the chemical field in recent years, it has low density, light weight, excellent thermal insulation performance, but high cost, and has been difficult to popularize in the building materials field.


A new building material - cement aerogel, a new aerogel with cement as the main component, is expected to solve this problem. The reporter went specifically to investigate.

 

 

CCTV reporter Gu Junling: As a building material, safety and non toxicity are necessary prerequisites. The performance of this cement aerogel is very stable. Even if it is immersed in a fish tank for a long time, it will not release any toxic substances into the water, and will have no impact on the health of fish.


The handle of cement aerogel is a little like the foam board commonly used in the packaging industry. Due to its very low density, only 1/20 of water, when it floats on the surface of the water, the part that sinks below the surface is almost imperceptible to the naked eye.


Then feel how light it is in another way. Put this matchbox sized cement aerogel on the flowers, and the stamens are not even bent.


Cement aerogel also has excellent hydrophobic properties. Whether it is water, coffee or other liquids, when dropped on the surface, the water drops will jump and roll like lotus leaves, and will not adhere to dyeing. Even strong acids and alkalis will not corrode it.


What is the strength and toughness of such a lightweight material? The reporter took a half pound steel ball and made a free fall from a height of 50 centimeters. It can be seen that the iron ball landed steadily on it, without even rebounding or jumping. This also reflects its excellent energy absorption performance, high strength, and good toughness.


Now let's compare the mainstream silicon based aerogels in the market. In comparison, the silicone based aerogel has a harder hand feel, but it is also more brittle. It will break when twisted by hand. This new type of cement aerogel is still stable and almost has no deformation even when an adult like a reporter stands on it.


As a new building material, cement aerogel also has excellent fire resistance. The 1200 degree jet flame sprayed on it for more than ten seconds, and the reporter's hand was stuck behind the 1.5cm aerogel sheet, almost unable to feel the temperature change.


This fire and flame retardant test not only demonstrates its excellent fire resistance, but also demonstrates its excellent thermal insulation performance. If our house uses this material as insulation layer, it can reduce heat conduction and reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning or heating by about half.


She Wei, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Southeast University: This aerogel is mainly composed of cheap cement, so its cost is only one twentieth of that of conventional aerogels. In the future, it will have a very broad application prospect in the field of building materials.


Building houses on the assembly line, adjusting the layout and structure at any time


Building materials are not just limited to the category of raw materials, but the empowerment of more new technologies has enabled building materials to extend downstream in the industrial chain. In a factory in Hebei, the reporter saw that houses can also be mass-produced on assembly lines like industrial products such as cars and home appliances.


CCTV reporter Gu Junling: I have been to many factories, which usually produce cars or machinery equipment, but in this workshop, it is very different. The products it produces are houses. Like the assembly line next to me, from the raw material line at the forefront to the product quality inspection line at the end, in just 120 meters, it can achieve a wall in 12 minutes and a room in 2 hours. Here, the traditional architectural model has undergone a disruptive cross-border transformation, producing houses like cars.


Fan Zesen, Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory of Green Building and Deputy General Manager of China Construction Technology: It adopts a steel-concrete composite structure, replacing the original steel bars with thick steel sections, just like the bones of the human body become thicker. The use of steel has increased by 40% compared to traditional reinforced concrete structures, while also providing greater load-bearing capacity and better seismic performance.

 

 

CCTV reporter Gu Junling from CCTV: After the wall panels and columns that just came off the production line are assembled, the rough structure of a house is already completed. The outer wall also has a thick insulation layer, which is fixed with stainless steel bolts to achieve the same lifespan as the house and will not fall off for decades.


After the modular houses are produced in the workshop, they can be directly transported to the construction site. The reporter saw on site that the staff were accurately positioning the landing point of this house. Taking a 120 square meter apartment as an example, it takes about 2 hours to complete the assembly.


Walking into the model room, I found that this steel-concrete modular house has a particularly prominent advantage, which is its flexible internal zoning. A 120 square meter apartment like this is assembled from three modules.


The entire layout can be reorganized according to personal preferences. For example, if all the walls of these three rooms are opened up and turned into a hall, there is no problem at all.


China's decoration and renovation industry consumption increased by 6.8% year-on-year


The consumption of building materials products is the most extensive field involving residents' consumption. Since the beginning of this year, China's building materials industry has continuously innovated, and through the deepening of measures such as green building materials going to the countryside and building materials trade in, the scale growth and quality improvement of the green building materials industry have been effectively promoted.


Recently, the China Building Materials Federation and other organizations jointly launched the "2024 Old Building Materials Industry Trade in Action", guiding more enterprises to provide consumers with more green and high-quality building materials products and richer measures to benefit the people, making it easier for consumers to "get rid of old and more willing to trade in".


Yan Xiaofeng, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the China Building Materials Federation: Since the launch of the "old for new" initiative in the building materials industry in 2024, eight major categories have been formed, covering various types of building materials such as lightweight building materials, coatings, ceramic sanitary ware, etc., with diversified convenient services and preferential measures for the implementation of the "old for new" plan.


The latest data shows that from January to September this year, consumption in China's decoration and renovation industry increased by 6.8% year-on-year. With the deepening implementation of the "Green Building Materials Going to the Countryside" policy nationwide, it not only provides tangible discounts for consumers, but also injects strong impetus into the green transformation of the building materials industry. At present, 72 building materials products in China have been included in the green building materials product certification system, and the revenue from green building materials has increased by more than 10%.
