Tackling Gypsum Rock Tunnel Difficulties, Driving Innovation of Yijin Expressway

On November 28, 2021, an expert consultation meeting on phased achievements of the major scientific research project Key Technologies of Corrosion-resistant High-performance Concrete for Tunnels in Gypsum Rock Strata was held in Chengdu. The project was presided over by the Highway Branch of Sichuan Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd., with Sichuan Tieke New Building Materials Co., Ltd. as the principal research institution.
As the research participant of the project, Sichuan Tieke New Building Materials Co., Ltd. attended the meeting. Other participants included the expert panel and representatives from Sichuan Yanjiang Yijin Expressway Co., Ltd., Sichuan Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd., Anhui Highway Engineering Construction Supervision Co., Ltd., Highway Engineering Branch of Sichuan Communications Construction Group, and the Project Manager Department of Contract Section XJ20 of Yijin Expressway on Route G4216, among other entities.
Approved for initiation after evaluation by Sichuan Communications Construction Group in April 2021, the project targets the corrosion of tunnel shotcrete and lining structures caused by gypsum strata. Its research covers the corrosion mechanism of gypsum acting on tunnel structures, the comprehensive performance of corrosion-resistant concrete applied in gypsum rock formations, measures to prevent or control sulfate attack on concrete, and the development of sulfate-resistant polycarboxylate high-performance water reducers.
At present, through theoretical research and in-depth development, the research group has developed a sulfate-resistant polycarboxylate high-performance water reducer. Its performance complies with the requirements of Concrete Admixtures (GB8076-2008) and Anti-erosion Admixtures for Concrete (JC/T 1011-2021). The corrosion-resistant concrete prepared with this admixture meets the technical specifications for Grade II Anti-corrosion Concrete for tunnels of this project.
At the consultation meeting, the expert panel listened to the report delivered by the research group. The experts highly recognized the preliminary work including technical investigation, mechanism analysis, product development and performance testing, and unanimously affirmed the phased research achievements. Meanwhile, constructive suggestions were put forward regarding the research orientation for the next phase.
The research outcomes of this project will include a complete set of technologies for sulfate corrosion-resistant concrete. It will effectively tackle key technical bottlenecks of anti-corrosion concrete for tunnels built in gypsum rock in China and provide reliable technical solutions for similar projects.
The R&D team of Sichuan Tieke has completed more than dozens of scientific research projects, such as Research on the Application of High-performance Crack-resistant Anti-corrosion Plasticizer and Manufactured Sand in Marine Concrete under High Chloride and High-temperature Environments for the Dorale Port Project in Djibouti; Application of Concrete Prepared with Manufactured Sand for High-strength Concrete in Transportation Infrastructure for Nanliang Expressway Project; and Research on Preparation and Engineering Application Technology of Manufactured Sand Self-compacting High-performance Concrete for Jian-Ge-Yuan Expressway Project.
